The "Ucumaris" is a Small fox-like animal that lives throughout the Peruvian Mountains. It is a crafty little thief who sneak into the Indian's huts at night to steal their poultry. As the recognized past masters of thievery, it is the Peruvian custom to blame him for all unexplained losses (the Ucumaris took it!). It is local superstition, therefore, that IF one pays homage to the Ucumaris by displaying a hand crafted pottery piece in his honor, the Ucumaris will be flattered and not steal your poultry - Thus, protection from theft!
